How to motivate yourself to play sports ?

You've been trying to gain muscle for years, lose weight etc… But nothing helps, you definitely cannot motivate yourself to play sports, even if you are fully aware that it would somehow improve your life.

And if “How to motivate yourself to play sports ?” was actually the wrong question ?

The problem is NOT that you don't feel like exercising.. The problem is that you prefer to do something else instead.

Note :
In this article, I will assume that your main goal is to change physically
.

1 – Why do you want to exercise ?

If you are not so motivated(e) only that, it's probably because the reason you want to exercise (and change physically) is not that important only that.

It may seem abrupt, say like that. But think about it 2 minutes.

Why do you want really losing weight ? 'Cause you took a little belly ? Why you want to gain muscle mass ? Because it would be prettier on the beach ? Because sports, It is good for the healt ?

For most people, relying solely on these reasons will not not enough to get started and hold on for the long term. In effect, exercising regularly is uncomfortable.

Uncomfortable indeed… More compared to what ?

Waking up at 6am. Take a shower. Swallow a coffee in a hurry and rush outside, even though it's raining cats and dogs. Take a crowded subway or bus, getting into traffic jams etc..

All for the sole purpose of getting to work. Everyone will agree that it is something very uncomfortable.

Nevertheless, we are all ready(e)s to undergo this discomfort. Because when you put it in perspective with not having money to eat, housing, or take care of your family, it immediately becomes “acceptable”.

For Sport, it's the same. Why bother moving from your sofa, dress in sportswear, going out to sweat for 1 hour, instead of sitting quietly in front of Netflix, while your “little belly” doesn't really bad impact on your life ?

Unconsciously, you'll think it's not worth it. And you wouldn't really be wrong.

Change physically is clearly not a long calm river. For no good reason, you will give up at the first difficulty.

However, if your life depended on it, you would probably be ready(e) to make the effort. For example, ladies, if you should lose X kg to fit into your wedding dress 🙂 .

For simplicity, before embarking on a sporting activity, be honest with yourself. What is the true reason why you want to change physically ?

For no good reason, you will always see the negative side of things (it's cold outside, the gym is noisy, I will sweat and have aches the next day etc.).

Set a goal without one “Why” pretty solid is like programming your car's GPS to go somewhere, when she doesn't even have gas.

2 – Who should you become ?

Most people who set a goal ask : Now that I've set my goal, what should i do to make it happen ? That's not a bad question. But that's not the first question you should ask yourself.. Ask yourself first “Who should I become ?”

Darren Hardy, the cumulative effect

It's a question we never really ask ourselves.. Keeping your eyes on the destination, we forget to analyze the path we have to travel to get there, and the many obstacles therein.

I'm not just talking about the difficulty of the workouts or the stagnation which will inevitably happen at some point.

What do you think of people who regularly count their calories? ? Limit their alcohol consumption ? Sometimes refuse to go to parties with their friends because they train the next morning ?

If you don't like these people (e.g. if you find them boring), you risk falling victim to dissonance cognitive, when you want to adopt the same behaviors.

On the contrary, if they inspire you with respect, it will be much easier to behave the same way, and thus achieve your goal.

If you want something you never had, you must be willing(e) to do something you've never done.”

Thomas Jefferson

3 – The instant gratification trap

As I wrote above, people who give up or never start their sports activity prefer to do something else instead.

And that something else usually gives a instant gratification. For example, the comfort that an episode of Friends after a hard day's work is indisputable. Next to that, hard to find the motivation to exercise.

We will always tend to choose the activity that will give us pleasure right away. Nevertheless, you can “drunk” so that your training gives you some form of instant gratification.

Just link something you love to do to your workout.

Personal example
During my recent dry, I had to include longer and longer cardio sessions at the end of my weight training. Or, is hated run. However, there is one thing i like to do : watch anime (japanese cartoons).

So I set myself a simple rule, compared to the anime I was following during this period : I was only allowed to watch it when I was on a treadmill (on my smartphone).

A man and a woman running on a treadmill.
Go running (on carpet) “allowed me” watching new episodes of my favorite anime.

Suffice to say that my perception of running has changed significantly. The very definition of “combine business with pleasure”.

You can use the same trick. For example, allow you to listen to the sounds of your favorite artists, uniquely when you train (I'm not sure it works with zouk, but to test 🙂 ).

4 – Motivation does not “do not find”, it is created

When trying to motivate yourself to play sports, we generally turn to sources exterior motivational. The video below is a good example..

The song repeats 3 time. You can only view the part you are interested in :
00:00 – 03:35
: Black background with lyrics display.
03:35 – 06:50 :
Focus on male athletes.
06:50 – 10:00 : Focus on female athletes.

Here is our classic operation. We watch a video like this, who we inspire. We then feel a boost of motivation, which takes us to l’action.

Diagram representing inspiration, that leads to motivation, which itself leads to action.
Classic scheme “Inspiration – Motivation – Action”

The problem is that inspiration is not something constant, because it is strongly linked to our emotions.

Mark Manson (american writer, personal development consultant and entrepreneur) defined the principle of “Do Something”. In effect, the fact of do a task, no matter how small, is likely to inspire us, what will motivate us next. Once motivated(e), we take action. And so on.

The real scheme “Inspiration – Motivation – Action” is therefore not linear.

It's actually a loop.

Diagram representing inspiration, that leads to motivation, which itself leads to action. Action then leads to inspiration and this repeats cyclically.
Become your own source of inspiration and motivation by completing tasks, as small as they are.

So don't wait to be motivated(e) to start moving. Start moving to be motivated(e).

By creating this virtuous circle, you will never be short of motivation to play sports or any other activity.

I myself used this principle to write my article on the dryer.

I wanted to do something very complete, and I had so many ideas in my head that I had no idea where to start. And to make matters worse, one of the best PlayStation games 4, Ghost of Tsushima came out at exactly the same time. In terms of instant gratification, we can hardly do better 🙂 .

Wanting to make a fairly visual article, I knew I had to incorporate graphics. So I decided one day to give myself 30 minutes, just to browse the different types of graphs that offers OpenOffice Calc and decide which would be the most suitable.

And once the very first graphic is done, I started getting more and more d’inspiration in relation to the structure of my article. And having a clearer structure in mind made me motivated to start writing.

When you lack motivation to exercise, don't wait for it to fall from the sky. Do something, even if it seems insignificant :

  • For strength training, just do the journey to the room. It is not impossible that you have this famous motivation once there.
  • If you plan to go running 1 hour, but you're lazy, just go run 5 minutes. Once launched(e), it will be difficult for you to stop after 5 minutes.

5 – Intelligently manage social networks

Social media can be a formidable source de motivation. We see a lot of athletes who have dreamlike physique and incredible performance..

However, Pay attention. Don't make it your ultimate goal to be exactly like these athletes.

Already because we are all different, if only at the morphological level.

receipt of the request, we clearly have lifestyles very different.

For example, if you have children and a busy work schedule, do not take as an ideal(e) professional athlete(lack of conformity will have been duly proven by the Customer) who is paid(e) for training 5 hours per day and has sports coaches, nutritionists and other overqualified physiotherapists available.

I'm not saying you shouldn't admire them. You can of course inspire, because they are big workers. But be aware(e)s that these athletes evolve in a universe completely different of ours and that neither you nor I will ever reach their level.

However, one thing is sure. You can be best(e) than the person you are today.

I'm definitely not the biggest and strongest. More I progress steadily.

And finally, It's all that matters.

My evolution from 2011 at 2020.
Aim for progress, not perfect.

There is no better inspiration than your future “you”. The personal data collected from users is intended to provide only and unique person you have to outdo is your “you” current.

Whether by doing 2, 3 Where 6 workouts per week. You are worth no less than one(e) other because you train less.

You must not Nothing at Personal data means any information relating to a natural person, apart from yourself ! Advance to your own pace.

The main thing is to progress.

6 – Assume your responsibilities

We all know this famous quote :

With great power comes great responsibility.

BENJAMIN PARKER, in the movie SPIDER-MAN (2002)
Cult replica of the Spider-man movie (2002)

The converse is also true : with great responsibility comes great power.

You have to accept the fact that changing physically is your responsibility.

Even if you have the best coach, the best room, the best knowledge etc., nobody other than you has the power to make you change.

You can't fix a problem if you don't think it's up to you..

7 – Once launched(e), don't scatter

We live in an era where a quantity almost unlimited information is freely available on the Internet. It's a double edged knife.

There is so much information that you end up getting lost in it.. It's hard to motivate yourself when you don't even know how to practice your sport effectively…

Pire, we are so paralyzed by the fear of being wrong that we end up consuming content on the channel… sans never take action.

Little girl holding her head in front of a red board with complicated equations. This represents the innumerable information available on the sport.
Don't complicate your life by systematically looking for THE best training program.

The best way to learn and assimilate something is to be mistaken. The ultimate program, the absolute method or the perfect diet do not exist !

I'm not saying that you have to start stupidly, without having the slightest idea what we're doing. But once you have identified the sport that suits you and you have documented a minimum(e) on the subject, get started.

And once launched(e), don't pollute your mind with an incessant flow of information. This will just confuse you, and you won't go nowhere. Take stock after some months, then make some changes if needed.

If you have a sports coach competent to accompany you all the way, it's even better.

Conclusion

Here is a summary of my top tips, if you want to motivate yourself to play sports :

  1. Identify the real reason for which you want to change physically.
  2. Integrate the fact that you will have to change your habits, this will be difficile at times and that changes will not happen overnight.
  3. Make your workouts pleasant, by associating activities that you love (e.g. listen to a podcast on a topic that interests you).
  4. Don't wait to be motivated(e) to start moving. start moving to be motivated(e).
  5. aim it progress, not perfect.
  6. Accept the fact that it is you alone(e) it is incumbent on us to change things.
  7. Get started and stay the course !
